A group of 33 controls were included in the study. The American group had a mean age of 30.1 with a range from 22 to 50.

Three subject groups were compared (subjects described on pages 3629).

The first group were depressed patients with DSM III-R major depression and had relatives with a history of unipolar depression, thus meeting the requirement of familiar pure depression disease (FPDD).

The second group was in remisson as they had had depression but had been asymptomatic and unmedicated for at least 4 months prior to scanning.

The third group were controls with no personal or family history of depression, and matched for age, sex and handedness.

[edit] Results

Note that the x-coordinate is listed in the paper with a "wrong" sign: minus for right, since the Talairach atlas used is the 1967 version.
