Finn Årup Nielsen is Senior Researcher at the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark. He works with complex data and data mining with data from social media and the brain.

He has programmed the Lyngby and Brede Toolboxes as well as setup the Brede Database and the Brede Wiki, and worked with classification of fMRI scans[1][2] and coordinate-based meta-analysis.[3] He has constructed the AFINN word list for sentiment analysis.

He is presently involved in the Responsible Business in the Blogosphere which involves social media data mining with sentiment analysis. The AFINN word list was created in this project.

His supervisor for the master and Ph.D studies was Lars Kai Hansen. Among his master thesis students have been Sindri Freyr Sigursteinsson writing the thesis Social media mining of the Icelandic blogosphere.
