Functional mapping of human learning: a positron emission tomography activation study of eyeblink conditioning reports a positron emission tomography study on eyeblink conditioning in humans.

The human subjects were scanned in three conditions:

  1. Delay conditioning, where binaural tones preceded air puffs to the right eye.
  2. Pseudoconditioning, where the tone and the air buff was not correlated in time
  3. Fixation, acting as a fundamental control task.


The study was previously included in the original BrainMap database as paper number 265.

Databases:

Group 1 of 7 right-handed healthy normal volunteers with 1 males and 6 females were included in the study. The group had a mean age of 27. The study on the human subjects was approved by the Intramural Research Board of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the Radiation Safety Committee of the National Institutes of Health.

Name: Pseudoconditioning
Stimulus: Uncorrelated air puffs and tones (Tactile stimulus)
Instruction: Unknown
Behavioral response: None/eyeblink (None response)
In condition no. 2, Pseudoconditioning, the subjects were presented with a Tactile stimulus. They were instructed to Unknown. The subjects responded with None/eyeblink.

Brain scanned was spatially normalized to the Talairach 1988 atlas. P-values were thresholded on <0.001, probably uncorrected on voxel values for multiple comparisons.
