Databases:

Group 1 of 102 healthy with 65 males and 37 females were included in the study. The Japanese group had a mean age of 52.7 with a range from 32 to 73. The study on the human subjects was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Nagoya PET Imaging Center. The subjects were recruited as a healthy cohort of people undergoing screening with PET for cancer. Any abnormal subjects were excluded

Using the radiotracer Fluorine-18-Flurodeoxyglocuse PET scans were acquired with a GE Healthcare Discovery LS.

The brain scans were analyzed with SPM2 and spatially normalized to MNI space, but the coordinates are transformed so their are reported wrt. Talairach space (page 207). The statistical threshold was set on P<0.001 uncorrected and with an extent threshold on 100 voxels (page 208).

Positive and negative correlation with harm avoidance and its subscales in males, females and the total sample was examined.

[edit] Critique

  1. The P-values are not corrected over voxels or the number of comparisons. However, a cluster extent threshold is set.
  2. The regions with correlation for harm avoidance are not entirely consistent: Among females it is the left frontal brain, among the total the right frontal, for the subscales it is mostly the posterior part of the brain.
  3. On the positive side the study is fairly large (102 subjects) compared to other personality neuroimaging studies
