Group 1 of 17 right-handed women and men with 7 males and 10 females were included in the study. The group had a mean age of 20.6 with a range from 18 to 26. The study on the human subjects was approved by the The institutional review boards at Stony Brook and Rutgers. The subjects had at the time of scanning been intensely in love for 1-17 months.

19 were recruited, but 2 was left out of the analysis because of head movement.

For fMRI T2-weighted Gradient-echo EPI scans were acquired with a 1.5T Marcone Edge.


[edit] Results

The brain scans were analysis with SPM99. Small volume correction was applied on a level of P<0.05 corrected. Other regions were investigated with P<0.001 corrected for multiple comparisons, and there no significant differences were found.

The hypothesized regions for small region correction were selected from 15 other fMRI studeis on reward and romantic love (Table 1): VTA/SN, caudate head/body, putamen, accumbens/subcallosal cortex/ventral striatum, amygdala, posterior hippocampus, anterior cingulate, posterior cingulate, mid-insula, retrosplenial cortex, medial orbitofrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex.
